Zinn Custom Hardtail Mountain Bikes

(Check out the new article on 29 inch wheels.)

There's nothing better than getting out on the trail with a bike that has been fitted for both you and your riding style. Zinn custom mountain bikes are designed to make you feel comfortable on the roughest of trails and help you feel confident in those "scary spots" on your favorite ride.

No matter how tall or small you are or how you are proportioned, we can make you a Zinn custom hardtail mountain bike to fit you perfectly. If you want a full suspension bike that fits you no matter how tall you are, we can do that, too. Click here for more information on our full suspension bikes.

The top picture on this page is a custom titanium mountain bike for a 5'10" rider with standard-size 26" wheels.

The bottom image shows a custom steel mountain bike built for a 6'9" rider that has 29" (700C) wheels and 210mm cranks for high speed mountain cruising! The larger wheel size is an incredible advantage for riders taller than 6'6", as it allows the bars to be high enough, since the limiting factor for big riders determined by suspension-fork manufacturers is the steering-tube length. Suspension forks for 29" wheels have the same steering-tube length as 26" models, but their longer leg length combined with the larger wheel radius brings the head tube, and consequently the handlebars, up several inches higher. The 29" wheels also roll over obstacles incredible well and are more in proportion with such big frames.

The long crankarms (we offer from 181mm to 220mm) assist a tall rider in maintaining power and smooth pedaling on steep, technical terrain as well as using their leverage advantage on long, steady climbs. The long cranks also help in smoothly powering through rutted, rocky sections, which, along with the extra gyroscopic stability and ability to roll over large obstacles of the 29" wheels enhances balance and leaves those bouncing around on 26" wheels in the dust! Another advantage of the long cranks is chainring clearance over obstacles. This frame's bottom bracket is 35mm higher than if it were built for 175mm cranks. Thus, the bike maintains the same height and clearance of the pedal above the ground, which also ensures that the rider's center of gravity is no higher with the longer cranks. However, the chainrings are 35mm higher, so you will probably never manage to smash them on rocks and logs! Note that seat tube length and top tube slope on our mountain bikes varies for standover clearance depending on the fork length.

As with all our frames, we won't let your bicycle out the door until it meets not only our high quality standards, but yours as well.

If you are a tall rider, we specialize in building bikes for you.

To see a variety of frames built with components, please see our bike gallery.  You can also see available colors for Zinn Cycles Custom Frames. If you don't see a color you like, you can choose a color from our special order color chart for an extra $150.

At Zinn Cycles, we will always give you an estimate of when your custom bike or cranks will be delivered. While we do our best to give an accurate ETA, it is still only an estimate. Custom bikes can take a long time to produce. There are a lot of factors that affect the building and delivery process of custom made products. We will do everything we can to deliver within our ETA, but it is not always possible. We strive to design and build the best quality custom cycling products for our customers, and we will do so even if it takes a really long time. I am certain that you will be happy with our products and it will be worth the wait.

Coupled Zinn Travel Bikes

We are pleased to offer custom Zinn frames in steel or titanium with S&S couplers for ease of traveling. And, of course, since we cater to tall riders, this means that very tall customers, too, can have the convenience of traveling with their bike in an airline-legal-size case. The 26” X 26” X 10” hard case flies on any airline for no extra charge and rolls easily on a pair of wheels with a handle in front.

These couplers are superbly designed and precision machined, whether in steel or titanium, to hold each tube together as strongly as if it were one piece. Naturally, we install them with impeccable workmanship into the tubes; we do this before mitering the tubes and building the frame. The couplers add some weight, but otherwise the ride quality of the bicycle is exactly the same.

Below, you can see the step-by-step packing of a super-large bike into the case. The titanium bike pictured being packed into the case is 65cm with a 63cm top tube and 195mm crank arms. As you can see, the fork with its extra-long steering tube will not fit along one edge and must go in diagonally. As a result, it must be removed, since the down tube would stick out of the case if the fork were left installed in the frame. But with a front-opening stem and a threadless headset with sealed cartridge bearings like the Chris King pictured, this is no problem. And by removing the fork, the crank need not be removed, although it could be for further ease of packing. From this sequence, you can see how to pack your own extra-large custom coupled Zinn travel bike!

Coupler Weight and Pricing:

Stainless steel couplers add 250-450grams/set to the weight of a steel frame, depending on tubing diameters.
Titanium couplers add 230-380grams/set to the weight of a titanium frame, depending on tubing diameters.

Couplers on a titanium frame add $845 to the price.
Couplers on a steel frame add $625 to the price.

Zinn Custom Full Suspension Mountain Bikes

Our lightweight Zinn Cross Country XC model (and Megabike 29er) is designed for fast cross country riding and racing. Three inches of travel (with a pedal platform) takes the edge off bumps and makes this bike light and more efficient for racers and serious, fast riders. Our Concentrak™ rear suspension design also keeps the rider from experiencing pedal kick back over bumps. The entire swingarm pivots around the bottom bracket shell, which serves as a huge center bolt of this big main pivot to keep everything in alignment and minimize wear.

Megabike XXL with 29" wheels next to size M XC with 26" wheels

Zinn All Mountain FS L

A simple squirt of grease from a standard grease gun into the Zert grease fitting under the bottom bracket shell keeps the huge pivot lubricated and moving smoothly for a very long time, with a minimum of effort and mess. The XC (or Megabike 29er) comes equipped with a Fox RP3 ProPedal fully-adjustable rear shock; DT and Manitou shocks are optional.

This frame gives a smooth, efficient ride and comes in XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL sizes for riders up to 6’8” tall. Our formed aluminum monocoque down tubes can be adjusted for volume to provide greater stiffness and strength for bigger riders. The Megabike is the oversized, 29-inch wheel XXL and XXXL-sized version of the XC model. This is a fast, strong, light, long-lasting, nimble bike for a tall rider between 6’4” and 6’9” tall.

Need a big bike with even more travel? Our Gigabike all mountain model in XXL and XXXL size comes with five inches of travel with a low, 2-to-1 leverage ratio, so the shock can operate smoothly at lower pressure for riders over 250 pounds. It is made to fit 29” wheels and has a bottom bracket high enough for 210mm Zinn custom cranks (http://www.zinncycles.com/cranks.aspx)!

The tough Zinn All-Mountain frame is for those who desire a sturdy long travel bike that can be pedaled for long distances. Our Concentrak™ rear suspension design eliminates pedal kickback and keeps the rear tire on the ground with an ample five inches of travel. The massive monocoque down tube and the precision pivot bearings keep this bike tracking where you want no matter the obstacles. This well-balanced bike is perfect for climbing all day while getting the most out of the descents, and it provides a comfortable ride for those epic excursions in the backcountry. Again, in the biggest sizes, it becomes the Gigabike, a 29er.

The replaceable dropouts are tough and stiff as well as lightweight.

We CNC-machine our own shock link as well as the precision pivots. Normally, we supply the bike with a Fox RP3 shock with a three-position ProPedal adjustment. Alternatively, both the DT SSD 210 shock (pictured) and the Fox Float RL shock perform great and have an easy-to-flip lockout lever.

The oversized pivot with large bearings around the bottom bracket shellcreates great stability and durability, while the pivot location eliminateschain kickback, no matter what gear you are in. A grease fitting underneaththe bottom bracket shell makes keeping the pivot bearings running smoothly a snap.

The entire Concentrak swingarm system provides great lateral stiffness, smooth vertical movement, long-wearing pivots, and no chain kickback. This system keeps your wheel on the ground grabbing traction when you want it, and it does so with a maximum of durability and a minimum of weight.

Zia Aero

This beautiful custom bicycle looks fast just sitting there; looks in this case are not deceiving. Lennard knows that a time-trial or triathlon bicycle needs to be more than a steep seat angle and little wheels. That's why Zinn Cycles developed the Zia. The steel Zia has lug-less fillet-brazed joints, curved aero tubes and is designed specifically to provide stable handling with aero bars. The titanium Zia (pictured) has a cutaway aero seat tube and rear-entry dropouts for optimal rear-wheel aerodynamics, as well as titanium down tube and seatstays. The Zia is hand built to provide comfort and fit for only one person...you.

Big and Tall Custom Bikes

The biggest frame builder in existence builds big frames. Makes big sense! At 6'6" Lennard Zinn knows what it takes. Light, strong, stable and comfortable custom road and mountain bikes for people from 6'3" and up.

If you are over 6'3", our Big and Tall Custom Bike may be the bicycle you have dreamed of but thought could not be found. You are well aware of the difficulties in finding a bicycle to fit you and perform well. I am 6'6" myself and have been building and designing frames for tall riders for over 22 years. Unlike shorter designers, I am able to ride big bikes and evaluate whether they perform to my standards, and I intimately appreciate the compromises in fit and performance that tall riders are traditionally asked to make.

Custom Zinn road and hardtail mountain frames for tall riders are built out of steel or titanium and are designed specifically to address the fit, rigidity, handling and shimmy problem that normally plague the bikes of tall riders. Our full suspension frames go up to XXL (23") and XXXL (25") with 29" wheels for proper positioning and improved handling for tall people with suspension systems designed specifically for big riders. 29-inch wheel bikes (also known as bikes with 29 inch wheels or 29" wheels, or as 2-9ers or 29ers), offer great advantages for many riders, but particularly for tall ones. Here's more on that: wheels29.aspx.

I am familiar with the shimmy and shake that many tall bicycles get at high speeds or riding with no hands, and I design my bikes to eliminate it. I know how whippy a tall frame can be standing or sprinting, and my designs address that as well. While being stiff, stable, and shimmy free, these frames are also built with the strongest available double-butted tubing-- True Temper OX Gold or Platinum or with oversized high-strength 3A1/2.5V titanium tubing. You get a long-lasting frame with a weight that belies its stiffness, strength and durability.

Big and Tall Custom Bikes are built with oversized tubing and unique frame geometry. The oversized tubing minimizes weight while maximizing stiffness and increasing the resonant frequency of the frame (thus reducing shimmy). The top tube is long enough for proper upper body extension, and by lowering and sloping the top tube we are able to make the bike stiffer, lighter, better. The bottom bracket is raised to accomodate for the crank length you select. The front end geometry provides great stability and minimizes shock transfer into the frame.

On road frames, the seat tube is shortened, and the top tube is lowered to stiffen the main triangle. The head tube on Big and Tall Custom road frames is reinforced and extends 1-1/2" to 3-1/2" above the top tube, making the effective frame size taller than the seat tube length indicates to maintain sufficient handlebar stem height. This design feature increases the rigidity of these tall frames and eliminate high-speed shimmy problems while still allowing the seat and stem to be set as high as needed. By lowering the top tube, the vertical dimension of the frame's front and rear triangles is smaller, resulting in a stiffer frame that will not twist back and forth as easily. We also suggest sloping the top tube to gain even more of the benefits described above. An oversized seatpost (29.8mm on steel big frames and 28.6mm on titanium ones) delivers abundant rigidity with the shorter seat tube.

True Temper makes custom Alpha Q carbon road forks specifically for our Big and Tall road frames. Unlike most carbon forks, which have a steering tube that is around 300mm long, ours is 450mm long! So we can build a bike for a seven-footer and still end up trimming some length off of the fork steerer. Furthermore, the carbon steerer is over twice as thick as the carbon steerers found on other forks, giving it much greater rigidity (a big issue with such a long steerer and a big rider) and strength.

Our mountain frames have sloped top tubes to allow for better clearance and also accept a 29.8mm or 28.6mm seatpost (depending on whether it is a steel or titanium frame), which is better able to handle the long seatpost extension of a tall rider. The head tube accepts 1-1/8" steering tubes and works with standard-length threadless steering tubes from Rock Shox, Manitou, Marzocchi, Fox, and others. As I mentioned on the Custom Mountain Bike page, the 29" wheel option is a good one for tall riders, especially those over 6'6", since the length of the steering tube on a suspension fork no longer is a limiting factor for the handlebar height on a tall rider's bike. The big wheels also roll over obstacles better, increase the bike's stability, and they are in proportion with the tall frame.

We also recommend that tall riders consider purchasing our custom cranks, since a longer crank provides a great leverage advantage and offsets the weight and wind-resistance advantage that small riders have over us. By specifying the crank length at time of frame order, I can make the bottom bracket height appropriate to that crank, so your pedal clearance will be sufficient. Since the bottom foot ends up at the same height above the ground as with a shorter crank and lower bottom bracket, the rider's center of gravity is also the same height above the ground. The frame can also be a bit stiffer and lighter as well, since the seat tube is correspondingly shortened from the bottom up as well.

Our Big and Tall custom frames are built to the same high quality standards as all Zinns. Steel and titanium frames are TIG-welded, or fillet-brazing is an option with steel frames. Steel frames are custom painted and clear coated to your specifications, while this is an option with titanium ones.

To see a variety of frames built with components, please see our bike gallery. You can also see available colors for Zinn Cycles Custom Frames. If you don't see a color you like, you can choose a color from our special order color chart for an extra $150.

We also supply Custom Cranks and Ultra-Long-Steerer Carbon Forks.
